Taken together, antidepressants outperformed placebo, but the effect size was small—0.3.
Advantages of one antidepressant over another were also small. But with the massive size of this meta-analysis (n=522 clinical trials), escitalopram and sertraline were found to have greater combined efficacy and tolerability than the others.
